Yeah, I ADORE it. I think it's one of the best NIN songs ever. So far, the album looks like it'll take The Downward Spiral and shit on it.
The depth of these songs are insane, too! "Survivalism" seems like a simple poppy tune until you really get into it, for example. The layers are gloriously delicions. "Me, I'm Not" has this deep, thick groove that just washes over you. I looove it. TR's really outdone himself. Even if the rest of the album blows ass, I'm 100% certain that I'll fall in love with the production aspect of it. And even then, the concept alone makes this album un-hateable. |

if this helps any, i tried an experiment with a casual listener. my room mate's into brand new, so when he walked in the room, i was like, yo. new NIN. check it out. i hit play and he listened for about 10 seconds and he said, "wow. sounds like... massive attack?"
so. |

that's because it does sound like massive attack. survivalism reminds me a lot of nihil/xtort-era kmfdm. my violent heart sounds like the last two skinny puppy albums. this stuff is really good, but it doesn't quite blow me away in the originality department. then again, there's not a whole lot that hasn't been done in electronic music. the programming and production are top notch at least.
i'm excited about this album based on these songs, but it doesn't seem like it will touch the downward spiral or the fragile. those are masterpieces that, in my mind, transcend genre and comparison. encrypted tour shirts and hidden images might get you excited, but they don't change the music. |

Cover art revealed, a video teaser is up on the site, another new website, yadda-yadda...
A French friend of mine GOT TO HEAR THE ALBUM. Forgive the grammatical errors, but this is his exact post copied word for word: Also ... MAN me and 4 other guests i chose were invited just before the show to LISTEN TO THE FULL YEAR ZERO ALBUM. Here fast hints: Hyperpower is AN EXCELLENT goddam intro with guitar 1:40 Vessel is a goddam Hip hop song with very loud noises, The great good is a fabulous scary almost instru with "Harp & Xylophone" The great destroyer ...... damn it's a classic rock song but at 1:40 it falls into an ubelivable 2mn of hard loud noises without senses. In this twilight is the slow song but very bad, too much noises and beat like in all songs. Hopefully Zero sum is an excellent almost slow instru to finnish the album. The warning got the end hidden immage, GOD GIVEN is the incredible song !!!!!!!! Disco song with scratchs and trent saying "Come on everybody, sing along, now : GOD GIVEN" really the most noticable song of the album, excellent. Oh, hell yes. |

i dunno if anyone has noticed but at the bottom of http://yearzero.nin.com/ , underneath the track listing, there's a bunch of clickable sections and you can see in-studio photos and stuff. amazing set-up he's got over there.

yeah, i especially like the tribal medieval pitchfork-things that line the one wall.
the racks upon racks of modular synths don't hurt either. i'd like to see what the live room looks like (i'm not sure the one that's in "the hand that feeds" video is his). |

forgive me, this has nothing to do with the new album, but I stumbled across this video and wanted to share, and it definitely didn't deserve it's own thread :) trent used to have really bad hair...

Welp, this bad boy has leaked! Originally leaked from a bootleg (this is what Rob Sheridan just told us), the latest leak was actually taken from the stream of the album over at yearzero.nin.com. Before you all go "whoa-ho, a stream? Yeah, right, it'd be even worse quality!" Not the case, my friends! Inside the flash files, the 256kbps MP3s were embedded. These aren't transcodes, either. These were deliberately put there.
It sure works well with what Trent said at a show the other night. "Go out and steal it!" Anyway, my thoughts on the actual album: It's fucking amazing. I honestly expected the final result to be a bit more With Teeth-like than it is (not a good thing), but surprisingly enough, it stands up there with The Downward Spiral. I agree with what Jeff said earlier in that albums like TDS and The Fragile were unique works of art that weren't really copies of anything else, but things that stood on their own as great music without any peers. Well, I can, with complete and utter confidence, say that Year Zero is another one of these albums. I find it better than TDS in nearly every way, and that is no ordinary feat. A little later tonight, I'll upload the 256kbps rips for you cats to our supa-secret MP3 bag. Until then, er, feel free to leech from this Sendspace URL until it's been depleted: http://www.sendspace.com/file/uxkinw Be sure to let me know what you guys think of the downright brilliant closer, "Zero-Sum." ;) Oh, and Kerrang!'s recent review of the album, which I normally wouldn't post (I'm no fucking street team wannabe prick, just a fan, heh), but I agree with it too much to pass by it: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/225/4464948...e109cd592_o.jpg |

ryane, that video is fucking hilarious. i love his hair.
cam, thanks for the stream rip - beats the transcoded files from this morning. i'm definitely buying this album. my only gripe, and i said this to jason earlier, is that this album goes from cheesy as hell to fucking brilliant in the space of four seconds. some songs sound like straight marilyn manson with the faux-swing beats... but then it breaks into a TR-909 shitstorm with tons of noise and guitar drones and stuff. give me a few days and i'll know exactly where i stand. |

1:46 in "the great destroyer" is worth the price of the album alone hell yeah. i don't know if i can say this is as good as TDS... it's pretty close though. imo TDS didn't have any unremarkable tracks, whereas this album has a couple. maybe i'll change my mind after a few more listens though. then again, maybe some of you guys will change your minds after you come down from all the hype and excitement. :) i do feel this is the best programming and production nine inch nails has ever done. and i love how much soul trent's voice has has on these last two albums. on with teeth, it complemented the almost classic rock feel of the music. on this album, it adds a nice, contrasting human touch to what sounds like the most inorganic music nin has ever made. (though with nin you never know, what you might think are synthesizers could be, like, whatever sound results from throwing a clam at a goat in a vacuum in a certain part of the nevada desert) |
