So I was recently looking at Vanity Fair's article on MadMen and was loving the photography by Annie Leibovitz, especially this shot here...
(IMG:http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/myspacestandard/Annie-MadMen-shot.jpg) I then started to watch the behind the scenes video to see how Annie Leibovitz lit the photograph - I took this still... (IMG:http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/myspacestandard/Annie-MadMen.jpg) It appears that she is imitating natural light with a Softlighter. Nothing to crazy, she probably Photoshoped out the light pole that would get in the way, and maybe shot a background plate with just the natural light coming through. BUT as I continued to anaylze this photo I began to see that it has been majorily Photoshopped! Now, I'm not surprised that it was, but its really jacked up. Take a look at the natural angles of the room from the video still (note the perspective)... (IMG:http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/myspacestandard/Annie-MadMen-corner.jpg) Now... lets take a look at the angles and perspective of the final shot... (IMG:http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/myspacestandard/Annie-MadMen-shot-perspective.jpg) What happened here? It appears that Annie shot the scene in seperate composites. She took a shot of January Jones from where she is standing in the video still, THEN after she got what she wanted she moved to the left and shot Jon Hamm exactly positioned and lit how she wanted. Then I would assumed she stood back and took some overall shots of the room that would later be stitched together to form the overall piece. NOW, from an overall look the photograph appears classy and fit to the time piece and most people would walk away from it without any negativity, and I still think its a great shot... but the perspective now just bothers me. I appears as though she isn't even looking directly at him. Her overall size appears smaller then him. Also, if you look near his ass the straight line that runs on the wall... isn't so straight, its very apparent that was a poor clone job. ANYWAY - I thought I would publicly think out loud and dissect this image. Being in the photography industry and seeing stuff like this I can't help but become a critic. Thoughts? |
